The sacrifice worship is one of the most important acts of worship in Islam and is not fard (obligatory) for every Muslim. The obligation to perform sacrifice applies to Muslims who meet certain conditions. These conditions include financial capability, mental health, puberty, and freedom. Islamic jurisprudence clearly determines for whom the sacrifice worship is obligatory. Understanding the obligation to perform sacrifice correctly is of great importance for Muslims to fulfill their religious responsibilities completely.

Financial Capability Condition and Nisab Amount

The most fundamental condition for sacrifice worship to become fard is that the person has sufficient financial capability. In Islamic jurisprudence, this situation is explained with the concept of "nisab." Nisab means that a person has enough money to buy a sacrifice after meeting their basic needs. According to current statements from the Presidency of Religious Affairs, if a person has enough money to buy a sacrifice after paying their debts, performing sacrifice becomes fard.

When calculating financial capability, not only cash money but also gold, silver, real estate, and trade goods are taken into consideration. However, basic necessities such as the house where the person lives and the vehicle they use are not included in the calculation. The financial capability required for sacrifice must continue until one day before Eid al-Adha. If the person loses their financial capability during this period, the obligation to perform sacrifice is lifted.

According to the majority of fiqh scholars, a person must have enough income to sustain their daily life and have sacrifice money above that. When making this calculation, the basic needs of family members must also be considered. The financial capability condition demonstrates the socially just nature of the sacrifice worship.

Mental Health and Puberty Conditions

The second important condition for the obligation to perform sacrifice is that the person's mental health is sound. People with impaired mental balance are exempted from religious obligations. This situation is in accordance with the principles of mercy and ease in Islam. The guardians of people whose mental health is not sound can perform sacrifice on their behalf, but this is not obligatory.

Having reached puberty is also necessary for the obligation to perform sacrifice. Children do not have the obligation to perform sacrifice since they are not yet the addressees of religious obligations. However, families can include their children in the sacrifice worship for religious education purposes. Fiqhi criteria are considered in determining the age of puberty.

Being free is also one of the conditions for the obligation to perform sacrifice. While this condition was important for slaves in the past, this situation is not practically applicable today. However, some special situations (imprisonment, hostage, etc.) may restrict a person's freedom and affect the obligation to perform sacrifice.

Special Situations and Exceptions

There are some special situations and exceptions in the obligation to perform sacrifice. Illness can affect a person's obligation to perform sacrifice. People who are seriously ill or have high treatment costs should make decisions considering these situations. Debt situation is also an important factor affecting the obligation to perform sacrifice.

Geographic location and travel situation are also matters that need to be considered. Muslims in places where it is not possible to perform sacrifice can act according to their situations. Online sacrifice services provide convenience in this matter in the modern era.

Heads of families can perform one sacrifice on behalf of their spouses and young children. However, married children need to perform their own sacrifices. Women also have the obligation to perform sacrifice like men, and if they have financial capability, they should perform their own sacrifices.

In conclusion, sacrifice worship is an important act of worship that is made fard for Muslims who meet certain conditions. While financial capability, mental health, and puberty are fundamental conditions, each person needs to evaluate their own situation. Muslims who have the obligation to perform sacrifice fulfill both their religious responsibilities and contribute to social solidarity by performing this worship in the most beautiful way.
