In Islamic jurisprudence, types of vows are examined in different categories and each type of vow has its own specific slaughter conditions. When performing the slaughter of a votive sacrifice, knowing what type of vow was made and acting accordingly is extremely important from a religious perspective. Each type of vow has different rulings and special conditions that must be applied.

Nazr Vow and Slaughter Characteristics

Nazr vow is a type of definite obligation that a person undertakes towards Allah and is a type of vow that must absolutely be fulfilled. Promises given in the form of "If my matter is resolved, I will slaughter a sheep" fall under the category of nazr vow. In such vows, the person has made a vow conditional on a specific condition, and when the condition is fulfilled, the votive slaughter becomes obligatory.

In nazr vows, the characteristics of the animal to be slaughtered may be predetermined. If the person said "a sheep," at least a six-month-old sheep must be slaughtered; if they said "a goat," at least a one-year-old goat must be slaughtered. It is essential that the animal be healthy, flawless, and suitable for slaughter. In nazr vows, a different type of animal than the specified one cannot be slaughtered.

The person who made the nazr vow cannot eat the meat from it; they must distribute all of it to the poor and needy. This rule stems from the binding nature of the nazr vow and is a ruling that must absolutely be followed. If the person eats from this meat, they must give the value of the amount they ate as charity again.

Conditions for Slaughtering Gratitude Vows

A gratitude vow is a type of vow given to express gratitude for a blessing from Allah. These vows given in situations such as recovering from illness, achieving success, or receiving good news are slaughtered entirely for the purpose of gratitude. The slaughter conditions for gratitude vows may differ from nazr vows.

More flexible rules apply regarding animal selection in gratitude vows. A person can choose an animal according to their means, and there are no compelling conditions in this regard. However, the animal must still be healthy and suitable for slaughter. In gratitude vows, it is also essential to follow Islamic slaughter rules and recite the basmala.

The person who made the gratitude vow can eat from its meat, but it is recommended to distribute the majority to the poor. More flexible rulings exist regarding the consumption of meat in this type of vow. Nevertheless, it should not be forgotten that the main purpose of the vow is gratitude and mutual assistance.

Distinction Between Absolute and Conditional Vows

In fiqh literature, vows are examined in two categories as absolute and conditional. An absolute vow is one given without being tied to any condition. Expressions like "I will slaughter a sacrifice for Allah's pleasure" are examples of absolute vows. A conditional vow is a type of vow that is tied to a specific condition.

In absolute vows, there is flexibility regarding the timing of slaughter, and the person can perform the slaughter at a time they deem appropriate. However, it is preferred not to forget the vow and to fulfill it as soon as possible. In conditional vows, slaughter must be performed within a reasonable time after the condition is fulfilled.

In both types of vows, the animal to be slaughtered must comply with Islamic conditions. The age, health condition, and physical characteristics of the animal are the same as the conditions for sacrifice slaughter. It is also mandatory that the person performing the slaughter be Muslim and follow religious rules during slaughter.

Votive Slaughter Through a Representative

The vow maker may not be able to perform the slaughter themselves for various reasons. In this case, votive slaughter can be performed through a trustworthy representative. Care must be taken in selecting a representative and ensuring that the slaughter will be performed correctly. The representative must act in accordance with the vow maker's instructions.

In votive slaughter performed through a representative, it is important that the vow maker's intention be present at the time of slaughter. The representative should state their intention while slaughtering, saying "For so-and-so's vow." In this way, the votive slaughter is considered religiously valid and the vow is fulfilled.

Online votive services are also considered within the scope of representation. When using such services, it is necessary to have information about the reliability of the service provider, how the slaughter is performed, and how the meat is distributed. Transparency and trust are the most important criteria in this matter.

In conclusion, having correct knowledge about types of vows and the slaughter conditions of each is essential for properly fulfilling the votive worship. Nazr, gratitude, and other types of vows have their own specific rulings, and it is necessary to act in accordance with these rules.
